Upcoming National Museum of Nuclear Science & History opportunities

October 20, 2011

NOTE: The National Museum of Nuclear Science & History will have a booth at the Cub Scout Leader Pow Wow in Rio Rancho on November 12th. They would like to make Scouts & Scouters aware of some upcoming opportunities:

  • The Museum will host a temporary exhibit, TECH CITY, from February 4, 2012 through April 29, 2012.  TECH CITY is aonce in a life-time experience for students 8-13 years old.   All pre-registered groups of at least 10 students will pay a discounted admission cost of $5.00 per person. The exhibition promotes engineering as a problem-solving process and encourages youth to consider a career in engineering.  The exhibition includes 20 interactive stations where visitors solve the kind of real-world problems that engineers face through opportunities for designing, building, testing, and modifying their creations. The Museum will coordinate field trips for elementary and middle school students to schedule visits during the school day as well as provide access to curriculum materials for teachers.
  • The 12th annual Zoom into Engineering & Science on Saturday February 11, 2012 will showcase local engineers with additional activities to Tech City and opportunities for interviews.  ZOOM will be open from 10:00 AM-4:00 PM for families and groups.

Boy Scouts & Girl Scouts will have ample opportunity to work toward many advancement award requirements during both the TECH CITY exhibit & ZOOM event!

The Museum is anxious to work with the Boy Scout Organization so that the Scouts have the opportunity to take part in some exciting science activities. Please contact the Museum Director of Education if you have questions about any of their upcoming events or their activities and field-trips for Scouts:

October 18, 2011
Gorham Scout Ranch Ranger Scott Johnson and Andy Mumma have been hard at work during the off-season up at Gorham Scout Ranch. Andy sent these photos this evening of the Adirondack Cabin project finished just this past weekend.
With the siding and bunks finished, the cubby storage and some minor trim on the door openings will be completed this week. They are ready for use! These four Adirondack Cabins were built in the Cundiyo area of Gorham Scout Ranch and will be available for use beginning October 21. Eight bunks in each cabin accomodate a total capacity of 32 persons.

Announcement of Centennial Eagle Scout Award patch for 2012

October 14, 2011

Many of you likely already follow the “Bryan on Scouting Blog”. Bryan Wendell, the senior editor of Scouting magazine, regularly blogs with the latest BSA news and information, program ideas and tips for leaders, prize contests and more. (To be entirely honest, his blog inspired the creation of the “Trailmarker Blog”). From time to time they post something on their blog that we simply can’t help but pass on to you. You don’t want to miss this:

To celebrate the centennial of Scouting’s top honor, all recipients of the Eagle Scout Award in the year 2012 will be eligible to wear a special version of the red, white, and blue badge, seen here.

Click here to read more about it at the original blog post.

Reading this story made me curious to know more about Arthur Rose Eldred, the first Eagle Scout. Not only is the Wikipedia Article on Mr. Eldred a good read, but this historical newspaper article was also a lot of fun to read. I found it interesting that at the time of his award, the newly organized BSA totaled 300,000 Scouts, and in one year’s time the national BSA awarded only 141 total merit badges to approximately 50 Scouts.

Philmont Training Center – in our own backyard

October 12, 2011

The Philmont Training Center (PTC) is the only national volunteer training center for the Boy Scouts of America. Since 1950, PTC has provided a unique environment for training volunteer and professional leaders, and a fun family program for every member of the family. Each year, more than 6,000 Scouters and family members attend PTC.

Each conference features the latest tools and techniques, audiovisuals, discussions, idea sharing, and activities led by a faculty of experienced Scouters. All registered Scouters are invited to attend training center courses; council approval is no longer required.

“Guide to Advancement 2011″ clarifies policy on Eagle Scout references

October 10, 2011

We received a preliminary copy of the national council “Guide to Advancement 2011″ today.

New in this edition:

  • Reorganized for easy reference
  • Frequently Asked Questions indexed
  • New approach to “active participation” and positions of responsibility
  • Internet advancement highlights
  • Helpful appendix
  • Searchable online version available
  • And more!

Our council Eagle Advancement administrator, Barbara Friberg, wanted to make you aware of the following change to the Eagle Scout Rank Application Process (from Section 9 – The Eagle Scout Rank)

Completed reference responses of any kind are the property of the council and are confidential, and only review-board members are those officials with a specific need may see them. The responses are not to be viewed by, or returned to, the Scout. Doing so could discourage the submission of negative information. For the same reason, those providing references shall not be given the option of waiving confidentiality. Once a review has been held, or an appeal process conducted, responses shall be returned to the council, where they will be destroyed after the Eagle Scout credentials are released or the appeal is concluded.

The Guide to Advancement replaces the publication Advancement Committee Policies and Procedures and is the official Boy Scouts of America source on advancement procedures. Upon final approval at the national council, a print version of the guide will be made available at the High Desert Scout Shop and an online edition will be posted at http://www.scouting.org
