Dear Great Southwest Council Adult Volunteers,

As way of introductions, I’m Mike Jacobs, your 2013 National Scout Jamboree Planning Chairman. I’m also the Venture Crew Advisor for Crew 1974 and an ASM for Troop 1974 in Rio Rancho, NM.

As we are preparing for the 2013 National Boy Scout Jamboree we need your help! To make this the best Jamboree ever we need the help of our Great Southwest Council Adult Scouting Volunteers. As we plan for the National Boy Scout Jamboree we need people from all across our council to staff our planning committees. Remember, this year Venture Crews are also invited to attend the National Scout Jamboree, so we would like to have some people helping out with Venture Crew experience We really need around 3 to 5 members for each of these committees:

Promotion and Public Relations Subcommittee

Need Chairman plus members

Transportation and Activity Subcommittee

Dale Balmer ChairmanNeed members

Personnel Subcommittee

Mark Yarbrough ChairmanNeed members

Equipment Subcommittee

Need Chairman plus members

Health Safety and Training Subcommittee

Need Chairman plus membersNote: We need a medical professional as chairman, since this committee will be reviewing the medical status of our contingent members. Is there a doctor in the house?

So, what would be you be getting yourself into? Well, it’s really only an hour a week…right? It actually won’t be that bad. Each committee will have certain tasks, specific to that committee, such as the equipment committee picking the T-shirts and hats and working with council to get the ordered. The Promotions committee will work across council to generate excitement and advertise the Jamboree. None should be overloaded, or take a real significant time commitment. Also if you son or daughter are going on the contingent this is a great way to make sure they have the best time possible! So, contingent parents, please considering volunteering.

To volunteer please send me, Mike Jacobs, an email at Europe_traveler@yahoo.com, or call me at (505) 962-2126 and leave your contact information and the committee where you have an interest to help. I would really like your response by Wednesday January 11th, so we can get going. We are actually behind the curve, since we need our contingent established by this April. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

We look forward to having you as part of the Great Southwest Council 2013 Jamboree planning committees.

This evening, we received the following message from the Volunteer Development (Training) Team Leader at National BSA, Mark Griffin:

A Scouter is considered trained for his or her Scouting position and eligible to wear the “Trained” emblem when they have completed the currently prescribed courses for that position. At this time this includes Youth Protection Training, This is Scouting, and the Specifics training for their role. For Scoutmasters, Coaches, and Advisors of outdoor program crews, Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills is also necessary. These courses are also included in the unit Journey to Excellence.

The BSA desires that leaders take the current training because as BSA program, policies, and practices evolve it is important that leaders stay current to provide the best, safest, and most consistent Scouting program for youth.

However, the BSA has long believed that a tenured leader does not need to retake “basic” training every time there is a new course – because through supplemental training, roundtables, Scouting magazine, and participation in activities, they can stay up to date with the current methods and practices of the program.

With the approval of the district training committee, Scouters who were fully trained under a previous “basic” training for their current role (and of course have completed Youth Protection Training within the past two years) may be given credit as “trained” if, in the opinion of the training committee, the Scouter has continued to stay up to date with the current methods and practices of the program.

These Scouters would be eligible to wear the Trained emblem, be considered “trained” in the unit Journey to Excellence, and would meet the training criteria of the various training awards for their position. Entering the qualifying training courses and proper dates taken into the Scouter’s record in ScoutNET will also mark them as trained.

It is the desire of the National Training Committee that leaders take the current training to be sure that they have the up-to-date information related to their role. While there may be a challenge getting tenured leaders to take the time to take a new course, in most cases these leaders can be excellent resources for the training committee to help put on Specifics or an outdoor skills course. As an instructor they should be given credit for completion of the course.

We can never be “fully trained.” There is always something to be learned, so we urge you to take advantage of training opportunities whenever they are available.
